Bosch Battery overview

Bosch eBike batteries are lithium-ion packs with a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) that keeps the cells balanced and protects them from overheating. They come in two formats: the PowerPack, which mounts on the frame or rear rack, and the PowerTube, which sits inside the downtube. Some bikes can run two batteries (DualBattery) for more range. Two 625 Wh packs give you 1,250 Wh, and on Smart System bikes with two 800 Wh packs, like the Tern GSD R14, you get up to 1,600 Wh.

Battery Mounting Positions

PowerPacks mount on the outside of the frame or on the rear rack, and they come off easily for charging. PowerTubes are built into the downtube, in a horizontal or a vertical orientation depending on the frame, and the two orientations are not interchangeable.

PowerPacks

On the current Smart System, the PowerPack Rack comes in 400 and 500 Wh, and the PowerPack Frame comes in 400, 545, 725 and 800 Wh. The earlier eBike System 2 PowerPacks were 300, 400 and 500 Wh. There is no PowerPack 625; 625 is a PowerTube capacity.

PowerTubes

On the current Smart System, PowerTubes come in 500, 540, 600, 625, 750 and 800 Wh, plus the CompactTube 400 for compact frames. The earlier eBike System 2 PowerTubes were 400, 500 and 625 Wh. The 625 exists in both generations, but the rest of the system (motor, display, charger) is not cross-compatible, so confirm your bike’s generation, not just the Wh number. Need a replacement? Send us your bike model and year and we’ll confirm the right pack.
